Tips for Preventing the Cold and Flu

DURAND, Mich.––We are in the deep end of cold and flu season. Going back to school or work after the holidays, we introduce each other to new germs we picked up along the way. The stress of the holidays is gone, but the stress of being sick on top of work and school continues. We know it's a pain to deal with a cold or the flu but there are some prevention tactics you can easily be practicing now. We've come up with a list of tips for preventing the cold and flu to help you make it through the season.

1. Eat Right

Eating healthy can be your best friend when it comes to preventing a cold if you're an otherwise healthy person without a compromised immune system. As you may remember, fruits, veggies, legumes, dairy, grains, and meat contain all the vitamins you need to keep your body functioning at its best. But we're not talking about the processed junk, so try to go as natural as you can! The less processed, the more vitamins you can use as combat against the cold and flu. Also, drinking enough water will keep your body hydrated and therefore running optimally.

2. Get Some Exercise

Yes, even in the dead cold of winter. There are plenty of at-home workout videos for any fitness level you can find just by typing those words into YouTube. Simply walking is also a great option. Bundling up and taking a walk outside allows your body the fresh air it needs, and if you're lucky a little sunshine will help to brighten your mood and put you to sleep quicker at night. Or if you're the type that needs a little motivation, take your tablet or phone to the gym or to your treadmill and watch tv while you workout. Even walking around the office for 2 minutes every hour diminishes your sitting time and will help your body stay strong with the germs come knocking at your door.

3. Sleep Well

Ah, the mysterious thing we can't seem to get enough of with our strenuous, busy lives. As you've probably heard a time or two, it's one of the best things you can do for your body. For adults typically 7-8 hours is good. If you're stressed or feeling ill to begin with shoot for 9 hours. But don't oversleep as it has been linked to lesser health and can mess with your circadian rhythm making it harder to stay awake when you need to. Life can get in the way, but with all the benefits of sleeping, like improved memory, sharper focus, improved mood, and most importantly stronger immunity, a full night of sleep should be a top priority.

4. Keep Good Hygiene Habits

This is an obvious one but worth talking about. Think about how many things you touch per day and how many other people also touch those things and finally how many people those people are coming into contact with. When you think about it this way, it's easy to see how you could catch a cold or the flu. Washing your hands regularly is a good start, but adopting other hygiene habits could help you stay away from a cold. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as these places are essentially gateways to the inside of your body and make it easy for any germs hanging out on your hands to make their way in. If you're in a crowd, or walking around other people who are coughing and sneezing, try to hold your breath until you make it to the 6-10 feet away range to avoid their direct germs. Regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces around your house and office is good to do all the time but can stop the spread of the cold or flu.

5. Get Vaccinated!

Arguably the most important step to not getting the flu is to get vaccinated! Simply put, not getting vaccinated means you run the risk of attracting a potentially life threatening illness. There are some people who shouldn't get the flu shot and they are: people with life threatening allergies to components in flu shots like eggs, gelatin or antibiotics, children younger than 6 months old, and people who might be sick and have been instructed by their doctor to wait before getting the shot. Aside from your doctor, there are plenty of quick and easy places to get your flu shot done such as CVS, Walgreens, etc. A large amount of insurance plans cover the flu shot completely while others have a low amount copay. It's one of the easiest ways to prevent having a terrible sickness, and should definitely be considered.

We understand the cold and flu are a pain, especially during the winter season. Hopefully these tips have given you some tools for combating sickness this season, so you can enjoy your time indoors instead of feeling miserable. We also understand driving in the winter is a pain, too. We've launched a new section on our website that'll give you tips and help you out with what your car needs in terms of maintenance in the winter. You can check our winter car care and vehicle maintenance tips, and even schedule maintenance here.

Car Hacks to Make Your Winter Mornings Easier

Car Hacks to Make Your Winter Mornings Easier

DURAND, Mich. –– Who can say they genuinely love going out into the frozen tundra, A.K.A. Michigan in the winter, to clear their driveway and car in the morning? No one? We thought so. Winter is the season of inconvenience if you park your car outdoors. Waking up in the morning knowing you’ll have to put some arm into scraping ice off your windows isn’t exactly a mood booster, and requiring extra time to allow your car to warm up is a pain to plan around. To ease the pain of winter, we’ve come up with some car hacks to make your winter mornings easier

  1. Raise Your Windshield Wipers: You just need to remember to do this before you go inside for the night. You can also put long socks over your wipers to prevent your wipers from collecting ice.
  2. Put Plastic Bags on Your Mirrors: Gallon-size bags should fit your cars mirrors. Covering your mirrors with bags should prevent ice and snow from accumulating so you can see clearly when you’re rushing to get out of the driveway!
  3. Make Your Own Window De-Icer: Store bought de-icer sprays can get pricey if you’re using them a lot. A great recipe you can make at home is as simple as using an empty spray bottle, rubbing alcohol, dish soap, and water. Alternatively you can mix three parts vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle, which may not completely work with a thick layer of ice.
  4. De-fog Your Windows Easily: It may seem silly, but keeping a whiteboard/chalkboard eraser in your vehicle makes the process quick. You can also roll down the windows or blast the AC to quickly defog on the go. Another solution is keeping a sock filled with kitty litter in your car, which will contain odor and condensation.
  5. Scrape Ice in a Pinch: If you’re really in a pinch and can’t seem to locate your ice scraper you can use a plastic card, like a credit card, or spatula to scrape off ice.
  6. De-Ice Frozen Locks: There are a few solutions. You can use a straw to blow your warm breath onto the lock. You can also use a squirt of hand sanitizer, which contains rubbing alcohol that makes those stubborn locks movable again. Finally, running your key under a lighter will warm it up enough to then unfreeze the lock as you gently push it in. Spraying a little WD-40 ahead of time will prevent the lock from freezing.
  7. Prevent Freezing Doors: Cooking spray can do wonders for many things, including your car in the winter. Spray a little in the cracks of your doors and on the rubber. The spray will prevent melted water from sticking in one place to freeze.

Although winter can be a real drag, we hope these car hacks to make your winter mornings easier will help! We understand an old car can really be a pain because of the issues that come along with it. If you’re in need of a new battery, windshield wipers, or even a new car, we can help! We have great new models like the affordable Chevy Cruze and Chevy Equinox that warm up fast and run well in the winter.

The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV Battery and Drivetrain Set Benchmark

The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV Battery and Drivetrain Set Benchmark

DURAND, Mich. –– The 2017 Chevy Bolt EV made a big splash in the electronic vehicle market with its debut at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) last week. The Chevy Bolt EV's battery and drivetrain set a benchmark for the EV future.

The well-touted, selling factor of the Bolt EV is the long range GM-estimated distance of 200 miles. Engineers designed the propulsion system to deliver a sporty, sedan-like, tuned driving experience. The Chevy Bolt truly raises the bar in EV driving.

The Bolt uses a single high capacity electric motor to propel the vehicle like most other EV's on the road, but it has a quiet motor and different gear configuration that separate it from the rest. The 200-mile estimated drive range is thanks to the offset gear and shaft configuration. The motor can produce up to 266 lb-ft of torque and 200 hp of motoring power, which can take the Bolt from 0–60 mph in less than seven seconds.

Chevrolet's first Electronic Precision Shift system controls the power delivery in the Bolt EV. The shift and park-by-wire system makes for a more precise feel and delivery of power and torque. This system also takes up less space, meaning more interior space and a better interior layout.

At the heart of this EV is its battery. With the EV experience of the Chevy Volt, battery engineers and partner LG Electronics developed a new cell and battery pack that offers the extensive driving range of 200 miles. The specs include: a 60kWh lithium-ion battery pack, 288 lithium ion cells, all of which weighs 960 pounds. The battery pack spans the entire floor of the vehicle and uses active thermal conditioning, like the Chevy Volt, to keep it operating at optimum levels in whatever climate it drives in.

“You usually have a battery cell that delivers either the desired levels of energy or power, but not traditionally both. With this cell design and chemistry we were able to deliver a battery system with 160 kilowatts of peak power and 60 kilowatts hours of energy,” said Gregory Smith, Bolt EV battery pack engineering group manager.

The Bolt has the ability to charge for a 50-mile commute in less than two hours. Using the optional DC Fast Charging system the Bolt can be charged in 30 minutes for up to 90 miles of range. If you're interested in an EV car now, the Chevrolet Volt is a great and very green option. While Chevrolet continues to make leaps and bounds in the EV market, they also have great cars in their lineup now that provide great gas mileage like the Chevy Trax and Chevy Cruze.

Healthy Eating Tips to Kick Off the New Year

Healthy Eating Tips to Kick Off the New Year

DURAND, Mich. –– A popular choice in New Year's resolutions center around eating healthy, getting in shape, losing weight, or a combination of the three. We like to think of resolutions as goals to make them more attainable. We've come up with healthy eating tips to kick off the New Year that'll help you reach your goals without going "full-out" and burning out.

1. Make Smart Switch-Ups

There are plenty of options to replace one of your go-to high fat, high sodium, or high sugar items. Cook with ground lean turkey instead of ground beef. It provides the same texture, similar taste, and way less fat and cholesterol (just make sure you pick lean). Another example is eating quinoa in place of white rice. Quinoa has more protein, fiber, and overall nutritional value. Check out some other ideas here

2. Eat Less Processed Foods

You may have heard of certain diets that lean towards "natural" eating. It's not an easy switch for everyone to eat all unprocessed foods, so make choices where you can. For example, eating whole-grain products is much better than "white" products because they are essentially less processed and contain more nutritional value. Take also potatoes, for instance: instead of grabbing sweet potato fries from the frozen section, grab whole sweet potatoes and cut and cook them at home. Be careful to notice labels while grocery shopping and try to stay away from ingredients you can't pronounce. Many times you'll find foods with "low-fat" or "reduced-sodium" have strange chemical ingredients added to make up for the thing they took out.

3. Snack Smart

This is where your switch-ups can really come into play, like choosing carrots and hummus instead of chips and cheese queso dip. As you might have heard, it helps many people to eat little healthy snacks in-between meals to help curb hunger and keep metabolism going. Pay attention to the serving size listed on the label, it's often a lot smaller than the portion you would just grab from the container.

4. Plan Ahead

Food prep is having a moment in the diet world, and for good reason. We're all living busy lives which means we don't always have time or the energy to make something healthy. You can combat this by preparing your food ahead of time, so you're apt to make a healthy choice on-the-go. Try chopping veggies like broccoli, peppers, and carrots, then portion them into baggies to store in the fridge so they're ready to grab whenever. If you have a commute to work, keep healthy dry foods like almonds in your car so you won't be tempted to go to the drive-thru.

5. Start Small

Our bodies will take time to adjust to a new diet or eating schedule, so start slow and make small changes over the course of time. It will eventually become habit to make healthier eating choices. Even if it's just one meal per day that you eat super healthy with, like having a salad for lunch instead of a fast food burger, it's one step closer to being healthier!

6. Don't Stress

Nobody's perfect! Don't stress if you end up eating a donut from the break room at work. You don't need to skip lunch because you made that little donut mistake. Just continue to make smart choices where you can, and you'll reach your goals! Also, make it a point to treat yourself. You may have heard of "cheat meals". These are things that are bad for you, like a big burger or deep dish pizza, that you plan to have once per week so you don't burnout on eating healthy.

No matter your New Year's resolutions, eating healthy is a way to live a more quality life. Eating healthy is also considered preventative, like the safety features on our Chevrolets are preventative as well. If your goal is to look better this year, you can start with a new car like the impressive Impala or slick new Cruze Limited in your driveway. We have budget friendly options that'll make you look stunning on the road in our used car inventory, too.

2017 Bolt EV Will Debut at CES 2016

DURAND, Mich.–– The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will be taking place in Las Vegas today. The 2017 Bolt EV will debut at CES 2016 today, January 6th, using Facebook Live. Chevrolet is the first auto brand to use Facebook to debut a vehicle via Facebook Live.

Although 2017 might seem far away, 2016 will offer the all-new Volt, Malibu Hybrid and Spark EV. The Volt was the first vehicle to establish Chevrolet in electrification expertise. With more affordable EV options than any other auto brand, Chevrolet is a clear leader in electrification.

The Bolt EV will bring connectivity technology and infotainment systems which will make it easy to integrate smartphones and other electronics consumers have come to rely on. The Bolt EV will also offer a stunning GM-estimated 200 mile range and break the barrier of affordable by coming in at under $30,000.

To tune-in for the debut, head to Chevrolet's Facebook page at 4:00pm today, January 6th.

There are so many EV solutions to look forward to, and the Chevrolet Volt out now to enjoy. While the EV options are great, Chevrolet also offers many vehicles with excellent fuel economy like the Cruze. We'd love to show you some options at our dealership. If you're on a budget or are simply looking for something different, we have some great one-owner used cars and used trucks.
