The Do's and Don'ts of Winter Driving

DURAND, Mich.,–– Winter driving is not only dangerous, but it is unpredictable as well. You never know what it's going to be like on the roads in Michigan during the cold and snowy season. Even the most skillful drivers have a hard time handling road conditions. The chances of getting in an accident are high, which means you must be more cautious on the road than ever. Stay safe and drive in confidence by following our do's and don'ts of winter driving.

What to do:

Vehicle Preparation

• Test your battery out. If it's weak, replace it as soon as possible.
• Check your tire's tread and replace worn tires with a new set of all-season or snow tires.
• Make sure to check your tires' air pressure, as they tend to shrink in the winter.
• Top off your windshield wiper fluid and replace your windshield wipers if they are worn.
• Keep an ice scraper on hand.
• Keep a set of jumper cables in your trunk.
• Try to carry at least half a tank of fuel. Fuel lines can freeze if there isn't a lot of gas in your tank.
• Get your brakes checked out to ensure they are in good enough shape to handle excessive winter braking.
• Make sure to perform routine maintenance on your car as soon as possible.
• Remove all piled snow off the top of your vehicle before you begin to drive.
• Prepare an emergency kit that includes items such as a blanket, flashlight, and small shovel.

Vehicle Driving

• Warm up your vehicle first before you begin to drive. Once you start driving, take it slow the first little bit to ensure the engine heats up properly.
• Accelerate slower when it's icy and snowy out.

Vehicle Driving

• Don't warm up your car in the garage or an enclosed space.
• Don't warm up your car by idling it. Give it time to warm up on its own and drive slowly the first little bit.
• DO NOT TAILGATE. You should give yourself twice the amount of space between you and the car in front of you.
• Keep your vehicle's momentum going up a hill. Don't accelerate, but maintain a steady pace to stop yourself from getting stuck or sliding back down.
• Do not slam on your brakes. If a car abruptly stops in front of you, it's better to pull off to the side as you start to brake instead of pushing hard on your brakes and sliding forward.
• Don't stop if you can avoid it. Try slowing down enough to keep your vehicle rolling until a traffic light changes.
• Don't take sharp turns at a fast pace. Make sure to slow your vehicle down much more than normal so that your vehicle doesn't slide around the turn.
• Don't use your cruise control in icy or snowy road conditions.
• Do not overcorrect if you start to spin out or lose control. Try to steer into the skid so that you regain more control instead of completely spinning out.
• Not everyone knows how to drive in the snow, so always be aware of other drivers.
• MOST IMPORTANTLY: Stay home if you can! It's better to stay off the road in dangerous conditions to protect the safety of yourself and others.

Winter road conditions are not ideal for driving on. Low Oil

Driving around in a vehicle with low or no oil can lead to nightmarish consequences. Think of your engine as your vehicle's "heart", and the engine oil as its "blood". Your engine's oil is pumped throughout its components, lubricating them and keeping them from rubbing against one another. Without a proper oil level, your engine's parts won't be lubricated and will begin to rub against one another, generating a lot of heat and causing serious damage to your engine.

Warning Signs: If you notice your "check oil" light (similar to the image above) illuminate or if you hear loud noises coming from your engine, it may be time to have your oil level checked out.

What to Do: Typically, you should change your oil every 3,000-5,000 miles, but you can also consult your vehicle owner's manual for a more accurate figure. Checking your oil level from home only takes a few steps and can help you determine whether or not you need an oil change!

Brake Replacements

The most important safety features of your vehicle are your brakes. Keeping them in good condition will prevent you from winding up in a monstrous car accident and can get you out of sticky situations if an emergency arises. Without properly working brakes, you run the risk of accidents and increase your chance of injury on the road.

Warning Signs: If you hear any screeching or grinding noises as you brake, or experience difficulty while attempting to brake, there is a chance that your brake's calipers, rotors, or pads may need to be looked at, repaired, or replaced. 

What to Do: If you notice any of these warning signs as you drive, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible! Driving around on worn or damaged brakes can lead to expensive costs, so getting your brakes looked at and fixed right away will keep you and your wallet safe from harm!

Transmission Damage

As the name suggests, your transmission transmits power from your engine to your wheels. Typically, your transmission is able to handle average commutes and driving, but if you frequently move from D (drive) to P (park) quickly, internal components can break down and quickly lead to a Halloween nightmare. Damage to your transmission can be caused if you skip oil or filter changes, sudden gear shifts in your vehicle, and low lubricant levels. Your vehicle is an investment. Treating it with care will keep your transmission in great working condition.

Warning Signs: If you smell a sweet or tart odor while driving that doesn't smell like Halloween candy, it could be your transmission fluid! Your transmission fluid is an important chemical used to transport the power from your transmission, and without it, your vehicle could become compromised very quickly. Additionally, if you hear any odd noises coming from your engine, your transmission may require an inspection.

What to Do: If you spot any of these symptoms while driving, call us and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. If you choose to drive with a potentially damaged transmission, you run the risk of compromising your entire engine, which can lead to nightmarishly high replacement costs.

Burned Out Headlights and Taillights

Your headlights and taillights are some of the most integral safety components of your vehicle. Your headlights help you spot trick-or-treaters that may spontaneously cross the road and your taillights notify pedestrians and other drivers that you're planning on turning down the street they may be walking or driving through. Without working headlights or taillights, you increase the probability of accidents that could occur at night, and if a police officer spots you with burned out lights, you could end up with an expensive ticket. Make sure your lights are in working condition before you drive at night!

Warning Signs: If you are experiencing difficulty seeing at night or notice that your visibility has dropped, your headlight may need to be looked at. You can tell your taillight needs to be replaced if the "clicking" noise your turn signal makes as you prepare to turn "clicks" at a much more frequent rate.

Flat Tire

If you keep trying to drive on a flat, your vehicle will heavily pull on your flat's side, making it difficult to drive straight, which can cause structural damage to your vehicle's important components.

Warning Signs: You'll know you have a flat tire if your vehicle keeps slowing down while you drive or if your steering wheel requires you to hold it with force to one side to keep your vehicle going straight. Additionally, if you notice your vehicle is sitting at an angle before you hit the road, your tire could be flat or need to be refilled.

How to Check Your Vehicle's Fluids

DURAND, Mich., –– Want to protect your vehicle from breakdowns, accidents, and costly repairs? Checking up on your vehicle's fluids at least once a month will help to reduce repair costs, improve your safety on the road, and protect your investment from potential damage. Learn how to check your vehicle's fluids to keep it running at peak efficiency. Follow these quick and easy steps!

How to Check Your Wiper Fluid

While it may not directly affect your vehicle's performance, your wiper fluid helps to improve your visibility on the road when you're driving. You'll use up your wiper fluid over time from cleaning your windshield. If you notice that your wiper fluid level is lower than normal, pop the hood of your vehicle and locate your wiper fluid reservoir (look for the "Washer Fluid Only" label). Locate the "full" label on your wiper fluid reservoir, and fill the tank until it reaches that mark!

How to Check Your Oil

Your engine oil is one of the most important fluids in your vehicle. It lubricates your engine's components, which reduces your engine's heat and prevents parts from rubbing against each other and causing damage. Typically, you should have your engine oil replaced every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so. Checking your oil only takes a few steps and should be done only after you allow your vehicle to cool down for an hour. Pop the hood of your engine and follow these directions to check your oil:

1. After popping the hood, look for your engine oil dipstick (it should look similar to the image above). Put your finger through the loop and pull the dipstick out of your engine.
2. Wipe the dipstick off on a paper towel or rag to make sure you can get a clean reading.
3. Reinsert the dipstick and remove it again to read the oil level. There should be labels on the dipstick indicating whether you're at the maximum or minimum oil level. If you're below the minimum level, bring your vehicle in for an oil change!

How to Check Your Coolant

You should check your coolant level as well to make sure it's at its designated amount. This fluid is what keeps the radiators from freezing or overheating. Before you check your coolant, make sure your engine has cooled down or you could be sprayed by scalding water! Use your vehicle owner's manual to locate your coolant reservoir. It should look similar to the image above. Your coolant should have maximum and minimum levels similar to other reservoirs in your engine. Get your coolant refilled right away if it's below the minimum level!

Keeping your coolant level high reduces your engine's heat and helps to regulate internal temperatures in your vehicle. You should have your coolant levels refilled every 30,000 miles, or whenever your vehicle owner's manual tells you to do so.

How to Check Your Power Steering Fluid

Your power steering fluid helps to transmit power from your steering wheel to your vehicle's engines to give you smoother and easier steering on the road. If you want to check your power steering fluid, look for a reservoir similar to the one above (it should have a power steering fluid label on the cap). The labels on the exterior of the reservoir will have two sets of lines, one for a hot engine and one for a cold engine. Consult your vehicle owner's manual if you aren't sure what type of engine your vehicle has. If you need your power steering refilled, bring your vehicle in for service right away!

How to Check Your Brake Fluid

Your brake fluid helps to transfer power from your brake pedal to your brakes, allowing your vehicle to slow to a stop whenever you need it to. If your brake fluid is below the minimum level, you may encounter trouble while you brake as it may require more force. To check your brake fluid, you must first locate your brake fluid master cylinder reservoir. It should be close to your brake pedal, but if you can't find it, consult your vehicle owner's manual. Like other reservoirs, it should have a "full" and "empty" indicator on its exterior. If it's below the "empty" label, schedule a service appointment with us!

Checking your fluids at least once a month will help you to extend the life of your vehicle, reduce maintenance costs, and improve your safety on the road.
