How to Avoid Traffic During Your Thanksgiving Travels

How to Avoid Traffic During Your Thanksgiving Travels

DURAND, Mich. –– Are you planning on making an across-state or out-of-state trip for turkey this Thanksgiving? If so, you’ll want to know the best times are to travel in order to avoid heavy traffic congestion.

Last year, AAA released an estimate that said over 46 million people were traveling for Thanksgiving, and that number likely won’t go down this November. Before you hit the road for a feast on Turkey Day, make sure you know how to avoid traffic during your Thanksgiving travels using some insightful data compiled by Google last year.

Don’t travel on Wednesday.
The day before Thanksgiving may seem like an optimal time to travel, but that’s exactly why you should avoid making a trip on Wednesday. Most people consider it a great day to head out because they want to finish up at work and still get to their destination before Thanksgiving Day. This results in millions of families hitting the road between 3 and 5 p.m., leading to traffic congestion. If you have to travel on Wednesdays, make your trip earlier or later in the day.

Do travel on Thursday.
It may not seem ideal to travel on Thanksgiving Day, but rest assured it’s the best day to make a trip without running into any traffic. Plus, if you leave early on Thursday you won’t have any problem arriving on time for turkey.

Head home on Sunday.
If not on Friday, many families drive home from their Thanksgiving destinations on Saturday, which Google says can be 40% worse for traffic congestion. If you want to save yourself from a headache, consider staying where you are an extra day and head home on Sunday.

Knowing how to avoid traffic during your Thanksgiving travels is important, but there are other factors involved in having a comfortable trip to your Turkey Day destination.

  • Find out what the weather will be like on your trip. Knowing what to expect will help you make decisions in regards to what interstates you take or whether you should expect traffic.
  • Plan your route ahead of time so you’re familiar with where construction is taking place or where the busiest roads are, both of which could elongate your travel time.
  • Have some sort of towing or roadside assistance contact information you can reference in the event you’re vehicle brakes down.
  • Check that your vehicle is ready for the drive. Use our fall driving tips to see what steps you can take to prepare your vehicle, or stop by our Fenton area Chevrolet dealer to find out what auto service your vehicle may be in need of.

Get Your Kids Ready to Go Back to School

Get Your Kids Ready to Go Back to School

DURAND, Mich. –– The weather is turning, soon the leaves will follow suit, and a harbinger of autumn is in sight: the first day of school. Do yourself a favor and help your kids prepare in advance for the school year, thereby avoiding chaos the night before the first day. Here’s how you can get your kids ready to go back to school.

What’s for lunch?
Instead of throwing together a smorgasbord of snacks and potentially an apple for your children's lunches the morning of, plan out what you can pack for them a week ahead. This gives you time to ensure they get a healthy meal, and allows room for them to choose one or two items they prefer. Make the lunches the night before and keep your morning meltdown-free.

Are backpacks packed?
Your kids are bound to forget something they need on the firs day of school –– a book, pencils, a ruler –– which is why you should round them up and get everything situated before the first day of class. Help your kids pack their backpacks with the necessary school supplies and books a day or two beforehand. Everything will be ready the morning of and all your kids will have to do is sling their backpacks on their shoulders as they head out the door.

No more staying up late.
It’s one thing to get lunches and backpacks ready, but the hardest thing for kids is simply waking up early enough for school. You don’t want to bother with storming into each child's bedroom three times over before they finally listen and get out from under the covers. The best way to avoid your kids being late on their first day of school is to adjust their sleep schedule now, and no later. Start putting your kids to bed earlier, and waking them up earlier. By the time the first day of school hits, they should be ready to rise and shine without giving pushback.

Don’t wait to calm their nerves.
To kids, school is like a dark, ominous raincloud moving in over their summer beach party. Help them shake off that idea and learn to enjoy their school environment. The last thing you want is for your kids to pout or give you grief about getting out the door because they’re nervous about the first day of school. Prepare your kids by having a casual talk with them about why they’re nervous or excited for school. Have them lay it all out, expose their feelings, and it may help them feel like a burden was lifted. They’ll walk into class with a clear mind and more confidence.

These are just some of the major tactics you can use to get your kids ready to go back to school. Hopefully they spark other ideas that you can leverage to prepare your kids for the school year. Feel free to comment below if you have other tips for parents. Remember, after you drop your young scholars off on the first day of class, stop in at our Genesee County area used car dealer for an oil change or any other auto service you need – for once without the kids in the backseat fighting.
