DURAND, Mich. – Twenty years ago in Flint, MI, General
Motors Institute – now Kettering University – served as the seminal start of a
journey that jumpstarted Paul Elio’s dream. The graduate of
General Motors Institute in Flint developed a fuel-efficient vehicle that
gets 84 mpg. Even better, Elio, the founder and CEO of Elio Motors, plans to sell
the vehicle for a mere $6,800.
Despite Elio’s vehicle being labeled a “game-changer,” it
has some drawbacks, although they’re necessary for the vehicle to be as cheap
and efficient as it is. Elio’s vehicle has only three wheels, and can seat only
two people, which might be trivial to plenty of drivers anyway.
Elio Motors website claims the vehicle’s ability to achieve
84 mpg is “simple physics.” Who knows what the scientific equations were that
led Elio to develop such a brilliant vehicle, but we’re guessing the graduate of General Motors Institute in
Flint developed a fuel-efficient vehicle through the lessons he learned at
his alma mater.
Elio expects to launch his vehicle into production by 2016,
but he still needs investors to help him reach that point. Fortunately, he has
plenty of support from suppliers in metro Detroit as well as a staff-ready
factory in Shreveport, LA.
Along with a growing following of backers, Elio’s vehicle
already has 45,000 reservations from intrigued drivers anticipating its debut.
He expects the vehicle will appeal to four market segments: new car buyers,
used car buyers, car buyers with a limited budget, and car buyers looking for a
secondary vehicle.
GMI in Flint was a starting point for Elio, but he’s since
moved out of the mitten and now resides in Phoenix. Finding the road to success
wasn’t simple for the entrepreneur, but after a slew of jobs before attending
and graduating from GMI, Elio has carved out – and nearly conquered – a niche
market for his product.
