Chevy Unveils First Self-Driving Vehicles

DURAND, Mich., –– This summer, General Motors has begun its campaign to launch the automotive world into the future. GM has manufactured and produced 130 self-driving Chevy Bolt EV vehicles in their Orion Assembly Plant in Michigan. Get an exclusive look into the future as Chevy unveils its first self-driving vehicles to the world! The technology may not be available to the public yet, but according to GM, it will be released to the public sooner rather than later! Read on to learn about these unique benefits the self-driving Chevy Bolt EV carries with it!

Chevy Unveils First Self-Driving Vehicles

The self-driving technology in the Chevy Bolt EV is possible in part thanks to LIDAR, a laser radar technology, which helps the vehicle detect its surroundings to ensure the safety of its driver and passengers. Other technology, like cameras, sensors, and radars, will help the vehicle detect any potential hazards at 360 degrees. While this technology will allow the vehicle to drive on its own, it is considered a Level-4 autonomous vehicle. This means that it's able to drive on its own, but still requires an alert driver to sit behind the vehicle in case of emergencies. Drivers can take control during any situation, but the vehicle is able to adapt to most scenarios, including traffic and freeway driving.

GM has made it their goal to become the first car company to mass-produce autonomous vehicles for the public. Last year, they purchased Cruise Automation, a self-driving car software company for $581 million. Since then, they've hired 1,163 engineers and other employees and have been investing aggressively in Cruise Automation's technology. GM will run Cruise Automation like a Silicon Valley startup company, investing almost $150 million quarterly to ensure that this technology is able to be released to the public sooner rather than later.

Additionally, GM has invested $500 million in the ride-hailing app Lyft, and plans to deploy the self-driving Bolt EV through the company's network in the near future. Before they bring this reality into fruition, however, GM has vowed to perfect their self-driving technology. Earlier in the year, they had already produced 50 self-driving vehicles, and now, with 180 to test and manufacture, time and innovation is on their side.

While the self-driving Chevy Bolt EV isn't available to the public, the Bolt EV and its award winning features are available to purchase today! Browse our inventory to read up on the Bolt EV and other award-winning Chevrolet vehicles to see what we at Graff Durand have to offer you. Get a glimpse of the future as Chevy unveils its first self-driving vehicles! Before you know it, you'll be piloting your very own autonomous vehicle!

GM Takes Lead in Solar Energy Use With Solar Array at Corvette Plant

GM Takes Lead in Solar Energy Use with Solar Array at Corvette Plant

DURAND, Mich. –– GM is taking the lead in solar energy use with a solar array at its Corvette plant, according to the Solar Means Business report put out by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

General Motors will continue to break ground in renewable energy use by investing in an 850-kilowatt array at the Bowling Green assembly, home of the Chevrolet Corvette, in Kentucky. This will be the largest installation by any automaker in Kentucky, and will generate enough energy to make 850 Corvettes annually. In turn, the Corvette features the greatest efficiency of any sports car on the market with an EPA-estimated 29 mpg highway.

Not only will GM break ground in Kentucky, but also at its Rochester Operations facility in New York with a 466-kilowatt array, and at its Warren Transmission plant in Michigan with a 800-kilowatt array in partnership with DTE Energy in the next several months.

The company will hold an industry-leading 11.4 megawatts of solar arrays throughout its 16 U.S. facilities, generating nearly 15 million kilowatt hours of energy instead of creating carbon emissions from burning 11 million pounds of coal.

Renewable energy is something important to GM, and that's clear as the automaker takes the lead in solar energy use with a solar array at its Corvette plant. You can make your own footprint smaller by investing in a fuel-efficient car from our used car or new car inventories. Stop by our dealership and we'd be happy to help you find the right one!

General Motors Is Developing Car Connectivity and Driverless Technology

General Motors Is Developing Car Connectivity and Driverless Technology

DURAND, Mich. –– News of automakers paving forays into vehicle technology that will make you feel like you’re entering a future similar to that of "The Jetsons" has left many drivers wondering when companies like General Motors might make their mark with unique technology.

Recent news informs us that General Motors is developing car connectivity and driverless technology it expects will raise its revenue by $350 million by 2018. It seems the automaker has been careful not to jump in headfirst, taking into consideration the desires of its customers before choosing a direction.

For instance, drivers aren’t interested in performance or sports vehicles like the Chevrolet Corvette becoming autonomous, and Chevy has heard them out. It claims cars like these will be the last to be adjusted with futuristic technologies that impede the unique driving experience.

After mastering 4G LTE data connection in its vehicles, GM is developing car connectivity and driverless technology through apps that will make it more knowledgeable about its drivers.  Connectivity apps will help the automaker develop vehicles based around how drivers react to features like automatic braking and hands-free highway driving.

Other convenient services by way of smartphone apps include the ability for drivers to transfer personal preferences from one GM vehicle to another, regardless of nameplate or brand, to tell each vehicle how to function according to their driving style.

In addition to new technology, GM wants to expand its footprint in car sharing. After Chevy recently disclosed it would team up with AutoShare to offer car sharing to university students in Toronto, GM wants to expand that service to other transportation hubs as many of its drivers take interest in more economic and eco-friendly options.

At our Flushing area Chevy dealership, we're looking forward to the outcomes of GM's progress in vehicle technology. Considering its meticulous craftsmanship and careful consideration of direction, we're certain Chevy and other GM brands will lead the future of automotive.

Story of the First Chevrolet Corvette

Story of the First Chevrolet Corvette

DURAND, Mich. –– There's no question Americans have an affinity for anything automotive, and many of the country’s top enthusiasts would agree that one particular classic performance car will never desist as a force to be reckoned with: the Chevrolet Corvette. In celebration of this monumental automobile that first rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953, it's worth taking a look at the story of the first Chevrolet Corvette's arduous road to success.

The idea for the Corvette emerged in 1951 after General Motors designer Harley J. Earl pondered the production of an affordable American sports car able to compete with European monoliths such as MG, Jaguar, and Ferrari. Although it took nearly two years for the concept to reach fruition, the first two-seater production Corvette finally entered the automotive pool and today we’re still seeing ripples from its impact.

Before beginning production, Chevrolet kindled the story of the first Corvette when they debuted a concept model in January 1953 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.  According to GM, a “trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II” was the eponymous influence for the fiberglass-body, six-cylinder Corvette that piqued the interest of everyone in attendance.

Like its ornate name, the first Corvette was one flashy son-of-an-automobile that exhibited an ostentatious Polo White exterior and red interior, a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, a wraparound windshield, whitewall tires, and removable plastic curtains in lieu of windows.

Unprecedented innovation also bolstered the 1953 Corvette as America’s new sports car, including features like a clock, cigarette lighter, and red warning light that turned on when the driver applied the parking brake. While the 1953 Corvette only showed average speed performance, going from zero to 60 in 11 to 12 seconds, its unique style and features helped value it at $3,490.

Story of the First Chevrolet Corvette

Despite the Corvette's popularity today, it struggled to gain recognition from the automotive world during the first two years of its life. To the chagrin of GM and Chevrolet, the 1953 Corvette received curious glances but failed to steal the hearts of American motorists.

By 1954, when Chevrolet began full-scale mass production of the car at one of their plants in St. Louis, the Corvette’s ho-hum start in the automotive world hadn't ceased spiraling downward since inception, and GM considered abandoning production for good. That is, until a certain rival automotive manufacturer introduced their two-seater Thunderbird.

This competitive threat pushed GM to improve the Corvette. In 1955 they stuck a V8 engine underneath the sports car's hood and never looked back. From then on the Corvette garnered the nickname “America’s sports car” and steadily became pop culture symbol perpetually revered and referenced by motorists and the media alike.

The Corvette’s impressive history and its comeback story are an example of what it took for Chevrolet to become the automaker it is today. Chevy’s drive, passion and the guts to do what others haven’t are what make us proud to sell New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Flint Area Chevy Dealership. Stop in sometime and see for yourself.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro is 28% Stiffer & Lighter

2016 Chevrolet Camaro is 28% Stiffer & Lighter

DURAND, Mich. – 9 million hours. That's over 1,026 years! Now try to wrap your head around the fact that 9 million hours of computational time was spent by Chevrolet's engineering team perfecting the 2016 Camaro's driving experience BEFORE the first prototype even hit the pavement! And it's safe to say hard work pays off because the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is 28% stiffer and lighter, delivering a driving experience unlike any you've ever experienced!

Technology these days... The endless hours of advanced computer aided engineering allowed Chevy engineers to accurately model various opportunities where the Gen 6 Camaro could add strength without adding mass. Those 9 million hours resulted in a more rigid body structure that makes the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 28% stiffer and lighter. However, it also allowed for more precise calibration of the steering and suspension systems which provides the 2016 Camaro's driver with extreme responsiveness and control for a more nimble driving experience.

Wondering how you can get your hands on one yet? The 2016 Chevy Camaro is set to make its public debut at Detroit's Belle Isle Park on May 16th and when all the specifics are released, our Chevy Dealer serving Owosso, MI will be ready to help you make your Camaro dreams come true. Chevrolet Officially Confirms Production of Bolt EV

Chevrolet Officially Confirms Production of Bolt EV
DURAND, Mich. - Folks, it is happening. Chevrolet has officially confirmed the production of the Bolt EV - a next-genration pure electric vehicle that has been designed to offer more than 200 miles of electric range. The Bolt EV concept was unveiled just a few short months ago at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and now a plan is in the works to have it hitting dealerships in the VERY near future!

Since its debut, consumers have delivered nothing but positive feedback and messages about the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Chevrolet decided that it was now or never when it came to building the vehicle. If they wanted to challenge the status quo of electric vehicles, they needed to get it done and get it done fast. The Chevy Bolt EV is going to change the electric vehicle game as we know it, offering customers in all 50-states a GM-estimated 200 miles of range at the starting price of $30,000. The Bolt EV also features selectable driving modes that are tailored to consumer's driving styles, from their daily commute to cruising around town on the weekends.

Chevrolet officially confirmed that production of the Bolt EV would begin soon at the Orion Assembly facility in Michigan, but an exact start date is still unknown. This $200-million investment will help support the skilled workforce that we have here in Michigan. Governor Rick Snyder expressed just how excited he was that this next-generation electric vehicle would be built in Michigan and that Michigan-made products like the Bolt EV point to a bright future for our state.

As one of the most environmentally friendly facilities in GM's global network, Orion Assembly is without a doubt, the place for the job. The facility is powered by gas from two landfills, annually saving more than 6,300 tons of carbon dioxide from impacting our atmosphere. It also contains a 350-kilowatt solar array that produces enough energy to power 165 homes and sends enough energy back to the grid to power 45 homes.

Chevrolet Unveils a Completely Restyled 2016 Equinox
DURAND, Mich. - After making record sales for the past five years, Chevrolet opted to spice things up a bit for this compact SUV. As a main "pillar" in its segment that has been loved for its great style, efficiency, safety, and connectivity, Chevy felt it was time to add some enhancements that would make the vehicle even more versatile. Just last week, Chevrolet unveiled a completely restyled 2016 Equinox at the Chicago Auto Show, which featured all new premium accents, new wheel designs, and some new available safety features.

Do not be fooled, there is nothing compact about the latest features on the 2016 Equinox. Chevy updated the Equinox's look, giving it a more modern exterior that is complemented by the interior's premium technology and functionality features. Chevrolet's completely restyled 2016 Equinox has a new front fascia and chrome-accented dual-port grille design, new projector-beam headlamps, and new taillamps with a redesigned license plate appliqué. Inside of the 2016 Chevy Equinox features premium cloth seats, a chrome-trimmed gear selector, and a revised instrument panel center stack.

Chevrolet's "Blackout" Super Bowl Commercial

Chevrolet's "Blackout" Super Bowl Commercial
DURAND, Mich. - It was quite the game yesterday as the Patriots fought to take home the Super Bowl XLIX title. While a large part of America tuned in to watch the showdown, a good portion of viewers tuned in for one reason and one reason only - the commercials. If you were watching the Super Bowl pre-game footage, you and another 100 million viewers may have thought your televisions were having some technical difficulties just moments before kickoff.

Chevrolet's "Blackout" Super Bowl commercial  grabbed viewer's attention immediately, and probably caused a few heart beats to skip, with its static and blank screen opening. Chevrolet quickly gave viewers relief and explained that having 4G LTE Wi-Fi in a Chevy Colorado could provide an uninterrupted live streaming of the game. Following Chevy's stomach-dropping advertisement, the commercial closed with the iconic "Back in Black" tune; the anthem for the 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year since its launch.

Five Water Intrusion Tests Endured by the 2015 Chevy Colorado

Five Water Intrusion Tests Endured by the 2015 Chevy Colorado
DURAND, Mich - Visually and mechanically dynamic, truck enthusiasts can't help but bask in the overall beauty of the 2015 Chevy Colorado. Sometimes we get so distracted by our Chevy vehicle's advanced technological features or its glossy finish that we forget about what each vehicle must experience before it is able to make its way to the dealership. A great example? The Chevy Colorado. There were five water intrusion tests that had to be endured by the 2015 Chevy Colorado prior to  it rolling off of the delivery truck and onto our lot!

1. The Dunk Tank - This particular test was inspired by the severe flooding that occurred in Thailand during the 2011 monsoon season. The 2015 Chevy Colorado is driven into a tank which is then flooded by water up to the truck's rocker panel. From there, GM engineers are able to examine the effect on the underbody and chassis components that contain electrical wires and venting systems.

2. The Universal Water Test - General Motor's universal water test is made up of 330 nozzles that spray 3,123 liters of water per minute for eight minutes straight. This puts the robustness of the vehicle's door and window seals to the test to determine long-term reliability. The test also helps to ensure that no water leaks into the cabin during wet weather conditions and the water does not interfere with powertrain venting systems or other underbody components.

3. Mist Test - The universal water test has a function that simulates misty conditions, which can result in water creeping into areas of a vehicle that large drops of water do not. This could cause a leak by having water wick through weatherstrips with low compression.

4. Deep Fording Trough Test - A 15-meter deep outdoor fording trough simulates slow treks through water when water intrusion can impact the transmission fluids and powertrain components such as the rear exhaust.

5. High-Pressure Sprayers - Engineers at General Motors use high-pressure sprayers to test the strength of components such as charge ports, powertrain vents, fuel vent systems, and vehicle air induction systems behind grille openings.

The five water intrusion tests endured by the 2015 Chevy Colorado were completed so that customers will never have to worry about the performance of their truck. No matter where your destination may be, General Motors wants to ensure that your truck can get you there no matter what weather conditions are outside your door. Flooded roads, river crossings, or even the most terrible of storms don't stand a chance against the Chevy Colorado.

Is This the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro?

Is This the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro?
DURAND, Mich - Rumor has it that another highly anticipated General Motors vehicle has been spotted out on the road near Detroit while undergoing testing. Although nothing can be certain, the people at Top Speed noticed that this vehicle had been camouflaged with additional roof-obscuring padding which made them question: could this be the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro?

Speculators believe that this camouflaged vehicle may be powered by a turbocharged, four-cylinder as a response to the turbo 2.3 liter four-banger that was recently added to the Mustang's power plant 2015 lineup. The 2016 Chevy Camaro will ride on GM's Alpha platform that can be found on the Cadillac ATS and CTS. This new platform makes for improved proportions, a clean-cut shape and will also provide 2016 Camaro drivers with rear-wheel drive. Spies believe that the design of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has not be completely redone, but will definitely feature a sleeker, more dynamic look.

Is this the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro? The truth will soon be told! Keep up with the latest updates with Graff Chevy Durand! Located at 9009 East Lansing Road Durand, MI 48429, Hank Graff Chevrolet Durand is revolutionizing the car buying experience. The Secrets Behind Camouflaging the 2016 Chevy Volt

The Secrets Behind Camouflaging the 2016 Chevy Volt
DURAND, Mich - Keeping one of the automotive industry's best-kept secrets is no easy task. Chevrolet has their work cut out for them as they work to mask the 2016 Chevy Volt's identity until it is ready for its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Ever wondered what exactly the secrets behind camouflaging the 2016 Chevy Volt are?

Well, firstly it is in the laps of Chevy engineers, not the designers, to create a camouflage that will maintain the secret of the Volt's styling and still allow for proper validation of its systems. It is a difficult balance, finding a way to cover more of the vehicle without compromising the results of the vehicle's development tests.

Although some of the "cool" designs Chevy engineers use for camouflage do earn some style points, the method to their madness is strictly focused on hiding the vehicle. Developing the perfect camouflage started six months in advance of early development. Here are some of the secrets behind camouflaging the 2016 Chevy Volt:

  • Black and white patterns act as the perfect color scheme, creating a shadow that hides the vehicle's design elements.
  • A 3D layering method can throw off onlookers, but much be applied carefully as to not interrupt the airflow around the Volt.
  • Engineers have discovered that swirl patterns work better than the traditional grid pattern when it comes to realigning pieces of the vehicle.
  • Bubble wrap is a light-weight, easily attachable camouflage material that can easily confuse all of those snooping Chevy lovers.
